DENVER - On the occasion of John McCain's visit to Denver today, Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) CEO Leah D. "While Republican presidential candidate John McCain visits Denver for the day today, we've been hard at work for nearly a year, working alongside elected officials and community leaders to lay the groundwork for the event that will put our nominee on the path to victory in November. And to us, Denver sure feels like home turf…
"More than 21,000 people have already signed up to volunteer, most of them Colorado residents. And we still have four months to go. This is a true testament to this community's investment and commitment to making this the most spectacular nominating convention in our country's history…
"When Governor Howard Dean became Chair of our Party, he outlined a 50-state strategy, based on the strong belief that if Democrats show up, stand up for what we believe, work hard and ask for votes, we can win anywhere - and we've seen that strategy work with strong Democratic gains in Western states.
"Governor Bill Ritter is a prime example of that ethic. And across the region, Democrats have gone from not a single governor in 2000 to five today.
"We've made those gains because the values that define Colorado - innovation, common sense solutions, inclusiveness and respect for the environment - mirror the values of the Democratic Party. Instead of focusing on wedge issues, Democrats in the West are bringing people together to meet the great challenges we face.
"In many ways, the Democratic National Convention didn't choose Denver. Denver - and Colorado for that matter - chose us. The new Democratic leadership in this state is emblematic of the new leadership we're offering all across the country, at all levels of government. "
