From July 13-16, 2020, Democrats from all over the country will gather together in the City of Milwaukee to participate in the Democratic National Convention, where we will nominate the next President of the United States. The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) is assembling a diverse team with skills in community engagement, event logistics, finance, operations, IT, and more under the leadership of Tom Perez, Chair, and Joe Solmonese, Chief Executive Officer. The DNCC team will oversee and deliver on all aspects of the planning and execution of this Convention, from housing the delegates to convening Platform Committee meetings to producing the Convention’s live programming, which will be seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

SUMMARY

The Director of Media Relations is responsible for building a media relations infrastructure to support our communications needs before and during Convention week. The Director of Media Relations will develop long-term media strategies to support the DNCC’s mission and to generate enthusiasm leading up to the Convention. The Director of Media Relations will serve, as needed, as an on-the-record spokesperson for the Democratic National Convention. This position is within the Communications Department and is one of three Director-level staff responsible for executing the communications strategy and goals.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • The Director of Media Relations reports to the Senior Director of Communications.

  • The Director of Media Relations will oversee interns for the communications department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and execute a proactive earned media strategy that tells positive stories about the DNCC in national and regional outlets.

  • Spearhead the creation of external communications materials, including statements, press releases, press notes and memos.

  • Develop solutions and messages to navigate complex rapid response situations.

  • Draft, edit and continually update message guidance for spokespeople and key surrogates to use when talking about the DNCC and related activities.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with reporters, editors, TV bookers, and specialty media at the national and local level.

  • Pitch DNCC spokespeople and Democratic surrogates to TV, radio, and digital outlets on an ongoing basis.

  • Plan, execute and staff national and regional press events.

  • As needed, serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for the DNCC.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated success developing strong relationships with members of the media.

  • Previous experience staffing high-level spokespeople and/or serving as an on-the-record spokesperson.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience managing teams and projects and keeping them on track.

The Director of Surrogate and Communications Operations is responsible for ensuring that all of the unique technical and logistical needs of the Communications departments are met. The Director of Surrogate and Communications Operations will provide logistical support and procure the necessary assets to ensure the smooth functioning of the DNCC Communications Department, including developing an infrastructure to support and deploy several hundred communications volunteers during Convention week. This position is within the communications department and is one of three director-level staff responsible for executing the communications strategy and goals.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • The Director of Surrogate and Communications Operations reports to the Senior Director of Communications.

  • The Director of Surrogate and Communications Operations will be responsible for hiring and managing 3-4 direct reports, in addition to managing and overseeing consultants, interns and volunteers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and oversee the creation of a system to recruit, manage and task several hundred communications volunteers for the DNCC.

  • Spearhead a strategy to identify, organize, inform key surrogates for the Democratic party and DNCC. Create systems to identify the best audiences/outlets for each surrogate.

  • Build a plan to deploy and maximize the time of Convention speakers and surrogates during Convention week.

  • Establish and oversee system to task volunteers with pitching, placing, and staffing surrogates.

  • Conceptualize and oversee the creation, management and staffing of the Convention’s multi-platform (TV, radio, digital) studios and media space (Studio 2020 and media row) to amplify the Democratic message through Democratic officials and surrogates.

  • Track and manage all housing requests and needs for the communications department.

  • Manage the credentialing needs for the entire communications department including staff, team captains and press volunteers.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Director of Digital Communications will help the DNCC develop and execute creative online strategies designed to engage networks, foster participation, and generate enthusiasm for the 2020 Democratic National Convention. In the months leading up to the Convention, and during Convention week, the Director will develop and oversee implementation and maintenance of all digital content including written content, graphics, and video.The Director will be responsible for managing all social media accounts associated with the DNCC and overseeing content strategy for the DNCC website. The Director will maximize the voice of key partners, Democratic surrogates, and online contributors. This position is within the Communications Department, and is one of three Director-level staff responsible for executing the communications strategy and goals.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • The Director of Digital Content reports to the Senior Director of Communications.

  • The Director of Digital Content will oversee at least one director report, as well as interns, consultants and volunteers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop strategic and creative digital campaigns—from concept to execution—that tell the story of our Convention across all existing and emerging digital platforms.

  • Create and execute a comprehensive digital strategy to improve outreach and increase engagement in the Convention hall and across the nation during Convention week.

  • Oversee deployment of daily digital content, ensuring high-quality output and message consistency across all platforms and channels.

  • Manage a team of staff, consultants and volunteers to develop charged with creating video, graphics, website content, newsletters and other creative digital content.

  • Coordinate with colleagues and partners to ensure that we meaningfully engage and amplify the voices of Democratic candidates, their surrogates, and other key influencers.

  • Incorporate best practice examples and closely follow trends and emerging technology.

  • Set metrics and spearhead analytics research to test and measure the effectiveness of our digital campaigns.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience managing large-scale, high-profile digital campaigns, preferably in a political capacity or at a non-profit or consulting firm.

  • A deep understanding of all aspects of digital communications, including email, social media, and website development.

SUMMARY

The Communications Assistant is responsible for providing administrative support to the DNCC communications staff. Responsibilities include maintaining schedules, helping execute and track project plans, managing press databases, drafting content for both earned media and digital purposes and managing communications interns. Through earned media, digital media, events and other creative opportunities, the DNCC communications team is responsible for setting a proactive and positive narrative in the months leading up to the Convention and for executing a thoughtful communications strategy during Convention week. This includes building relationships with reporters, informing and engaging surrogates and influencers, and orchestrating a strategy to support and deliver content to the 20,000 members of the media expected to attend the convention next July.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • The Communications Assistant reports to the Senior Director of Communications.

  • The Communications Assistant will help oversee interns for the communications department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and maintain shared calendars, workflow schedules and tracking the execution of project plans for the communications team.

  • Monitor news coverage in real time and flagging items that require rapid response.

  • Gather and distribute daily clips to Convention staff and partners.

  • Identify coverage trends and opportunities for potential engagement.

  • Create and maintain press lists for local, state and national media.

  • Draft and/or copyedit press releases, op-eds, speeches, pitch notes, blog posts and editorial board memos.

  • Assist with developing social media content for a variety of channels, especially content that amplifies important news of the day.

  • Draft and/or copyedit messaging guidance, and writing materials that will help surrogates amplify specific messages and better collaborate around shared goals.

  • Onboard and manage workflows for communications department interns.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Summary

The Director of Human Resources will be responsible for managing day-to-day HR operations of the Convention, including organizational development, HR initiatives and programs, employee communications, engagement and relations; payroll and benefits, and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws.

The Director of Human Operations is housed within the Finance & Administration Department. The Finance & Administration team is responsible for the fiscal and administrative aspects of the DNCC, including finance, budget management, human resources, and general business operations.

The goals of the Finance & Administration team are ensuring the Convention operates effectively and efficiently through the creation of policies, procedures, and processes that allows staff and other departments to accomplish their goals.

This is an exempt position under the FLSA.

Reporting Structure

The Director of Human Resources reports to the Senior Director of Finance & Administration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct new-hire orientation and on-boarding process.

  • Serve as primary point of contact for staff regarding all benefits and payroll matters.

  • Maintain and administer personnel policies, including the employee handbook and job descriptions.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements and advise management on needed actions.

  • Manage and oversee all HR-related issues including reporting procedures, documenting, investigating, and providing recommended disciplinary for policy violations.

  • Support management by providing human resources advice, counsel, and decisions.

  • Work closely with HR staff at the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C.

  • Other duties as required.

  • Willingness to be a proactive team member to help accomplish the goals of the Convention.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or related field.

  • 7+ years of human resources business partner experience.

  • PHR/SPHR or similar related certifications preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability in HR and strong leadership skills.

  • Familiarity with Wisconsin and Milwaukee specific human resource requirements.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Previous experience working with large special events is a plus but not required.

Director of Technology

Role Summary:

The Director of Technology will oversee the Democratic National Convention Committee’s information technology infrastructure. This role will be a combination of strategic decision making, personnel management, hands-on problem solving, and both short- and long-term project management. The Director of Technology must be a strong leader and a team player and will thrive in a startup-like culture with all-hands-on-deck and rapid-response moments. 

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports To: The Director of Technology reports to the Senior Director, Technology and Information Systems.

  • The following functions report into the Director of Technology: Network administration, help desk, asset management, and IT security.

  • The Director of Technology will also be responsible for managing/overseeing designated current and future technology consultants retained by the organization as well as numerous external partners and providers.

Qualifications:

  • Strategic Oversight:  The Director of Technology must have the vision and ability to develop, recommend, direct, execute, and report on strategic initiatives that satisfy technical organizational requirements. The Director of Technology will work in a consultative fashion with senior leadership and department heads as an advisor on technologies that may improve efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Information Security:  The Director of Technology will be responsible for verifying the integrity and safety of all organizational and proprietary data and will be responsible for development of information security methods for emerging threats. In addition to active threats, the Director of Technology will develop and manage disaster recovery policies, procedures, and practices.

  • Operations:  The Director of Technology is responsible for day-to-day technical operations and 24/7 support of all systems, which include both internal and external facing services. The Director of Technology will work closely with the Chief Technology Officer to manage planning and purchasing related to all technology needs, as well as vendor relationship management.

  • Infrastructure:  The Director of Technology will provide strategic and tactical solutions for the design, implementation, and support for all networks, virtual and physical servers, systems, and communications infrastructure.

  • Application Development:  The Director of Technology will be responsible for managing all efforts and staff related to software development, including strategy and planning, project management, and quality assurance.

  • Management and Mentoring:  The Director of Technology is a multifaceted technology subject matter expert. As such, an ability to mentor team members regarding industry standards, technical and procedural best practices, and advanced technical knowledge and troubleshooting is required.  All Technology Department personnel will report directly to the Director of Technology. In addition to managing and mentoring Technology team members, the Director of Technology will work directly with DNCC staff on technical and project management activities regarding ongoing and future projects.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Professional experience:

    • 7+ years of information technology experience.

    • 3+ years of information technology technical team management of 5 or more technicians.

    • 3+ years of technical project management.

  • Platforms, environments, and tools preferred:

    • Cloud hosting and virtualization environments, both private and public (AWS, Azure, etc.)

    • Cloud services environments (G Suite, Office 365, etc.)

    • Enterprise deployments and management of:

      • Microsoft and Google products and services, including servers, computers, software suites, enterprise applications, and licensing

      • Cisco and Ubiquiti networking devices

    • VOIP deployments from hosted providers as well as on-premise servers

    • Identity, password, and security management software and services (Okta, LastPass, 1Password, Dashlane, etc.).
